How We Started
Dear Friend and Neighbor,
It was the end of May, 2006 – I can’t even remember the exact date now.
A day that had a dramatic effect on my Wife and I.
I always wonder where the destination is for the emergency vehicles that
speed East on Wood Street with sirens blaring and lights flashing past my
workplace. It was around 10:30 in the morning on that day that I got the call.
Donna thought I should come home ‘cause the police where there. She had returned
home and found two teenage boys in our basement. They had kicked our front door
in and fled with only a camera and some change when confronted. She was lucky
she wasn’t hurt. The feeling of being a victim of crime is a terrible one.
Anger, fear, and the feeling when you can’t do anything hangs with and eats at
you. That is why I guess I started talking to others in the neighborhood. I
found that I wasn’t alone. There had been other “incidents”. Thus the
neighborhood came together and the Nelson Park Addition Neighborhood Watch was
founded.
It is now a year and a half later and things have changed. We do have a very
good neighborhood. And it’s safe to say we want to keep it that way. Sure we
have our share of problems like any other area, but we have a sense of security
that grows every day. One thing I have found is that we have some great people
living here. I think everyone wants to be able to have that sense of “security”
when they are home and knowing that their neighbors are watching out for them
when they are gone. Through the efforts of our Watch Group, we now have an open
link with the Police Dept., learned about home and personal security, and had
many resourceful guest speakers with great information. It has been a learning
experience for everyone involved. The future holds many exciting events and
growing enthusiasm.
For those of you who have helped to start this program in motion – Thank
You. For those who would like to get involved – come join us.
There is always a nice time had by all.
Let’s keep up what we have going. It’s only going to get better. Our goal –
WORKING TOGETHER TO KEEP OUR STREETS SAFE
